Shikamaru summarizes the entire Gennou plot, trying to figure out what the next move will be. As Guy and his troops are returning to the village, Hinata appears telling Shikamaru that Naruto is missing.

Inside the statues of the Hokages, Gennou is explaining his plan to Naruto: the true target of his explosions is the mountain itself. The right sort of blast will bring it down right on top the village, destroying it. Naruto tells Gennou that such an action is a terrible final act and that he cannot let Gennou do it. Gennou, however, claims that the battle is already over: he won the second Naruto entered the room, since the explosives will go off as soon as Naruto leaves no matter what happens. Gennou taunts Naruto telling him that he can never defuse the notes all by himself, scoffing that the friends he complained about wouldn't be of any help.

Just as Gennou unleashes a barrage of kunai, Kiba appears and knocks them all away: Hinata and Shikamaru have deduced and discovered the location of the final trap. Shino traps Gennou in bugs, but Gennou denotates what turns out to be just an explosive clone. On top of the mountain, Gennou tries to set off another note, but Shikamaru traps him with Shadow Bind and forces him to approach. When Choji attempts to take him into custody, another gas trap goes off, giving him time to send a kunai into one of the tags. Nothing happens and Neji appears to tell him that the tags have already been dismantled. Suddenly, Gennou is surrounded by all of the Konoha 11.

Unwilling to give up, Gennou sends up a smoke signal as a diversion, finds another tag, and detonates it, destroying the mountainside and sending it down onto the village, killing everyone.

Sakura declares it is an illusion, and dispels it. Gennou summons a bird and the Konoha 11 thought he was going to escape, so Ino uses her jutsu to steal Gennou's body, but fails to maintain it because of the sharp pain she felt using his body. Rock Lee jumps in and fights him, and his gas trap goes off again. In the smoke, they were both even. Gennou is on the ground, still conscious, and Lee is standing. Both are exhausted, but Gennou claims his final trap is not fulfilled yet. The 10 Genin + Shikamaru (he is a chuunin) find out that the bird had explosive tags and so does the paved crack on the Third's face. Naruto, with the help of Choji and Hinata, uses Rasengan and blows away the bird. Gennou, his body having been failing all along, dies clutching a picture of his son (who looks like Naruto) that has a note with "treasure hunt" written on it. As Shikamaru reports to the Fifth, it appears that the old man had given up on truly carrying out on his plot after meeting Naruto and being reminded of his son. The Konoha 11 later meet in the Ichiraku Ramen shop and swear that they will protect Konoha: not every enemy will turn out to be like Gennou.
