[edit] History
The university was formerly known as University Telekom. Its Melaka campus was set up in 1997 by Telekom Malaysia Berhad, the largest telecommunications company in Malaysia. Located in the Ayer Keroh district, the initial setting up of the campus involved converting an old campus belonging to the Institute of Telecommunication and Information Technology, which is also a subsidiary of Telekom Malaysia Berhad.
Its Cyberjaya campus opened in Malaysia's first intelligent city of Cyberjaya, on 8 July 1999. This campus was the brainchild of the country's fourth Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, as a center of learning and research for the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC), a 750 km² area designated as the country's high-tech research and industrial area. The relationship between the campus and the MSC is intended to be similar to the relationship Stanford University shares with the Silicon Valley. Later, he requested the management to change the name of Universiti Telekom to Multimedia University.
Within the first five years of its founding, the university's total student population grew beyond 10,000 in both campuses.
The university encourages students to participate in an evaluation of their lecturers at the end of every trimester. That evaluation is called the Online Academic Evaluation (OAE). In the OAE students rate their lecturers on a scale of 1 to 5 in different areas. These areas include availability for consultation, communication skills, teaching qualities and the likes. The OAE therefore acts as a tool to help the university grade its lecturers so that the university can further improve the quality of education in which it provides.
The university also implements a system named as Academic Advisory System (AAS) which is also practiced in other universities. This system appoints a lecturer to a group of students to be their mentor. Students can seek help or council from their advisors if they were to face any problems be it in the university or out. It's well known between students that such a system is useless & many advisors evaluate their advisees without even meeting them which can be considered as time saving for students.
A number of lab equipment has been donated by well known companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Intel, Cisco, Nokia and other major companies as well. These labs act as a place for students to conduct their practical sessions so that they may apply the theories in which they have learned during lecture hours. Most students are not allowed to use the labs above mentioned, since they are dedicated for research purposes.
The university is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia.
[edit] Campuses
[edit] Cyberjaya Campus
This campus is located in the heart of Cyberjaya. A road in the shape of the figure eight, circles the campus with the buildings arrayed both inside and outside this shape.
At the moment, many new buildings are under construction ie. Faculty of Management, Olympic-sized swimming pool, Soccer Stadium. The Faculty of Information Technology has opened beginning 2007 and has received good feedback about the design and structure of the building. To date, half of the phases of construction has been completed and students are looking forward to the completion of the remaining phases of the campus.
[edit] Melaka Campus
The campus is nestled in Bukit Beruang (lit: Bear Hill) and has greatly affected the local community. With increase in students, the community has seen growing numbers of residential area and commercial outlets.
