As of 2001 India census,GRIndia Muktsar had a population of 83,099. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Muktsar has an average literacy rate of 65%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 70%, and female literacy is 59%. In Muktsar, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Muktsar has a proud heritage. It is known as the last battlefield of Guru Gobind Singh, which proved to be a most decisive conflict in the military history of the Sikhs. Literally the name of this city means "the pool of liberation". The forty Sikh warriors who fought to death here against the Mughal tyranny more than three centuries ago are remembered by a grand festival held here every January, which attracts devotees from all over the world.

The Maghi Mela held in the town of Muktsar,a day after Lohri(13 January) is very famous.Held every January it is to commemorate the velour of 40 Muktas.These Muktas sacrificed their life for Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji(The 10th Sikh Guru)at the battle of Khidrana.A huge Mela is held at an open space mainly on the Bathinda-Kotkapura Byepass beside the D.C. office. A horse fair is also held in village Lambi of Muktsar on the ocassion of Maghi Mela.

The Famous Gurdwara Tutti Gandi Sahib is worth of visiting.Beside the Gurudwara is an old tree on which Guru Gobind Singh Ji tied his horse.It has a big talav(pond) in which sikhs take bath ocassionaly and mainly on the famous Maghi Mela(14th January).Beside the gurudwara is a small ajaeb ghar(museum)which consists of paintings of the battle of Khidrana. On the railway road is an old mosque, Angooran Wali Maseet.
