Muenster cheese is an American cheese, only vaguely related to the French Munster cheese. Muenster has an orange rind with a white interior. It has a very mild flavor and smooth, soft texture.

Muenster cheese is a smooth textured cheese with an orange rind that was originally produced in France and then in the monasteries of Germany. In fact, “muenster” is from the Latin word “monasterium”. This washed -rind cheese is made from cows’ milk. Muenster cheese can range from having a mild taste with no odor to a strong flavor with a pungent aroma depending on the age of the cheese. This cheese is commonly served as an appetizer and with grilled food.

The name Muenster is also related to locations in Germany: regions and city with the name, transliterated into English characters as Muenster. A processed cheese, sold as appetizing food, related to Muenster Cheese is Sweet Muenster Cheese.
