The following is a list of the MTV Video Music Awards winners for Best Rock Video. In 1989, the award was called the Best Heavy Metal Video. From 1990 to 1995, the award was called the Best Metal/Hard Rock Video. In 1996, the award was renamed the Best Hard Rock Video and the award acquired its present name in 1997.
