MTV Live (Canada)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MTV Live is the flagship show of MTV Canada, on the air since March 21, 2006. The program is an interactive talk show where viewers are encouraged to jump into the conversation. It is similar to the talkshow The Chatroom, but with a live audience.
Viewers can interact with MTV Live in person by sending an e-mail to liveaudience@mtv.ca to obtain tickets, by calling 866-536-LIVE or by e-mailing feedback@mtv.ca. MTV live broadcasts from the Masonic Temple in Toronto, a space which has hosted concerts from the likes of Frank Sinatra, David Bowie, Tina Turner, and as a favourite rehearsal spot of the Rolling Stones.[1]

[edit] On-air Personalities
MTV Live's on-air personalities [2] come from a wide range of backgrounds. The hosts are:
- Jessi Cruickshank: Weird on Wheels (YTV)
- Nicole Holness: Chart-topping R&B/urban artist X-Quisite. Nominated for a Juno Award for Best R&B Recording of the Year [3].
- Daryn Jones: Buzz (Comedy Network), Rick Mercer Report (CBC)
- Daniel Levy: Son of actor Eugene Levy.
- Gilson Lubin: Comedy Now and was opening act for comedian Dave Chapelle
- Diane Salema: Discovered in an HMV music store.
- Aliya-Jasmine Sovani: Former producer at MuchMusic
MTV Live launched with Daryn Jones helping to introduce the hosts. A number of personalities from other MTV channels around the world taped short messages aired on the program. MTV Live's first guest was Kevin Zegers, a Canadian actor that stared in the movie Transamerica. The second guest, and first live performance, was from jazz musician Jamie Cullum.
The early episodes used three hosts each day. Starting in mid-May the show started using two hosts for each MTV Live episode, with Daryn Jones acting as the primary host with alternating co-hosts Jessi Cruickshank, Nicole Holness, Daniel Levy, and Aliya-Jasmine Sovani. The remaining MTV hosts continue to appear in short segments during MTV Live and other MTV Canada programming. Also appearing regularly on the show are Johnny Hockin, host of MTV Live Hacked, and the production assistant, Paul Lemieux, also known as "Paul the Intern".
On the 100th episode (which turned out to be their 101st episode due to a miscount) they showed the worst moments of MTV Live.
The MTV Live set was designed by 3RD Uncle, an interior design firm based in Toronto.[2] The main seating area is made up of 3 rows of circular couches where the hosts and audience will sit. Behind the seating area is the original Masonic Temple stage complete with a jumbo screen, spiral staircase, and theatrical curtains.

[edit] Criticisms
[edit] Steve Irwin
During the week that Steve Irwin ("The Crocodile Hunter") died they aired a re-enactment of Steve Irwin's death. Many called the act childish and some even called in asking that the hosts be fired.[citation needed]
[edit] Ages of Hosts
Many believe that the hosts are too old to be hosting a youth-oriented MTV show. However, the hosts ages range from 22 to 28.
