[edit] History
Mrs. Possible is a brain surgeon by trade, mother to Kim Possible, and wife to Dr. James Possible, however, little else is known about her.
Despite having been in the franchise since the start of Season 1 her background, family and personal history are never discussed in the show, and she has never been the subject of any flashbacks or retcon, leaving her past a mystery. All that is know about her, prior to the start of Season 1, is that she was heavily pregnant with Tim and Jim when Kim first entered pre-school, and that she was not smitten on the idea of having twins.[1]
When first introduced in Season 1, Mrs. Possible was portrayed as being a stereotypical teen comedy/drama mom. An intelligent homemaker who was devoted to her family, and whose career was often mentioned only in passing. As the franchise progressed, she gradually become more actively involved in the series, though she consistently had markably less screen time than her husband, fewer lines than him, and she crossed over into mission plots far less often, too.
Mrs. Possible spent most of Season 1 as an occasional character with only a marginal speaking role, primarily appearing during mealtime scenes in which she was the organizer or the peacemaker, or on occasions when Kim needed advice. Among her most notable appearances in Season 1 was the episode Downhill (Second only to Mother's Day as the episode in which she has the most screen time and dialog), where she serves as a chaperone on school ski trip. She inadvertently embarrasses Kim by revealing her childhood secrets to her classmates and becomes slighly upset upon discovering that Kim did not appreciate her presence, but eventually redeems herself by bestowing the same fate upon Kim's rival Bonnie (who had invited them on the trip out of malice towards Kim in the first place). [2]
During Season 2, Mrs. Possible's character was expanded upon somewhat, and she appeared in a number of more diverse roles, including 2 occasions when she joined Kim on missions, [3][4] and one in which a mission came to her. [5] The most notable of these occasions was the episode Mother's Day, in which Mrs. Possible co-stared alongside her daughter, and participated in a mission in Ron's absence. Her participation in this episode is particularly notable in that she not only replaced Ron as a character, but also as a source of comic relief. In this case, however, the writers used a generation gap between her and Kim (the misunderstandings and differences of perspective that occur because of it) as a source of humor, rather than Ron's normal slapstick style. [4] While on missions, Mrs. Possible wears the same mission clothes as Kim, though her top conceals her midriff, while Kim's does not.
Mrs. Possible played only a small part in Season 3, and largely returned to her roots as a teen comedy/drama homemaker and mom, spending much of her screen time advising Kim on various issues, which primarily relates to teenage issues and boys (specifically, Ron). [6] When the issue arose, though, she took the idea that Kim and Ron might be destined for a deeper relationship a lot better than her husband, [7] who suggested that Ron might receive a one-way trip to deep space if he upset Kim.
[edit] Personality
Mrs. Possible is the most stable member of the Possible family. She's quite good-humored and often manages to remain chipper, even when Kim is having an emotional crisis or when the twins are blowing things up around her, and she frequently acts as a stabilizing factor in the household, offering both conflict resolution and advice on personal issues. She is also a very patient woman, able to put up with the antics of Jim and Tim, as well as the slightly odd ways of her husband.
Despite the generational gap, Mrs. Possible is emotionally in tune with her daughter (most of the time), and she acts as an anchor for Kim during her frequent periods of teenage angst - helping her to put her feelings into perspective, and reminding her that things aren't always as bad as they might seem.
When dealing with her daughter, Mrs. Possible is often deliberately obtuse. Purposefully overlooking or misunderstanding problems related to personal perspective so that she can either injects logic into proceedings or so that she word things in such a way that Kim is forced to inject the logic herself. [6] This is especially true in situations where the problem at hand relates to image or appearances, or when the problem relate to other people's perceptions of Ron.
On the occasions when she hasn't been in tune with her daughter, she tends to act as a “stereotypical embarrassing parent”, treating Kim as if she were younger than she is, and revealing embarrassing personal secrets about her to all and sundry. [2]
Although Mrs. Possible usually projects an aura of calm confidence in all situations, she occasionally shows small signs of frustration or disquiet when dealing with Jim and Tim's rambunctious behavior. Showing that, although she loves them, they sometimes drive her crazy. As such she has, on a few rare occasions, attempted to bribe or emotionally blackmail Kim into taking on “Tweeb related chores”, such as collecting them or dropping them off from somewhere. [8][9] Favorite tactics of hers include the “Puppy dog pout “ [10] and the obligatory cash bribe [8][9] She also occasionally shows signs of hurt when Kim would rather be with her friends than her mother, [5] or when generation gap issues arise. [2] Though she rarely says anything.
[edit] Notes
- Mrs. Possible attended Upperton University in her younger years, as revealed in Clothes Minded. This is, so far, the most that's ever been revealed about Mrs. Possible's youth.
