Welcome!

Hello, Mrlopez2681, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome!  --Ghirla | talk 07:14, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

Hello, your aim to improve the coverage of classical ballet is certainly laudable. Keep up the good work! --Ghirla | talk 07:14, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

Just a tweak: don't forget to add the articles you often edit into your watchlist and remember that proper names are not italicized (e.g., Marius Petipa, not Marius Petipa). You may want to check WP:STYLE for more guidelines. --Ghirla | talk 12:10, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Marius Petipa

It appears some of your additions are quite close to http://www.doingmyhomework.com/show_essay/12194.html . If you have the permitions to use their materials please indicate so, if not please rewrite so it would be sufficiently different and no possible allegations in copyright violation would be warranted abakharev 03:02, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Hello. I find the biography section of the article Marius Petipa, which you added on January 15, 2006, almost the same to the page http://www.balletmet.org/Notes/Petipa.html . Reading your user page and considering the date of the article on Balletmet written, I have a strong doubt that it may be violating copyright. If not so, could you please indicate that you have the right to copy the article of Balletmet? The reason I am asking this is because, someone in the Japanese Wikipedia started translating this article, and if the "original" English version is illegal, the Japanese version will have to be deleted as well... Aotake 03:43, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Since you haven't given any responce to my question, I decided you didn't have a right to copy the source...

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We appreciate your contributions to the Marius Petipa article, but we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material. Perhaps you would like to rewrite the article in your own words. For more information, take a look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Happy editing! Aotake 02:48, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:VaganovaStudetnts1.jpg

Did you take this photo yourself, or is a screenshot of some kind? Just wondering, if you took the photo yourself that's fair enough, but if you take a screenshot of someone elses work you can't release it to the public domain. Just checking, please add a bit more info on the images you upload in the future. --Sherool (talk) 14:44, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Also unless you are over a hundred years old several of the pictures you have tagged as {{PD-self}} are clearly not made by you. Now they are probably in the public doman judging by the dates in the articles they are used, but try finding a more acurate tag and include some source info on those images as well. Recomended reading is Wikipedia:Public domain, Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and Wikipedia:Copyright. --Sherool (talk) 14:53, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Spartacus (ballet)

I just spotted the article. It is a total mess and could benefit from your attention. We still don't have the articles on those artists who made the ballet famous - Vasiliev, Liepa, Lavrovsky, etc.

Also, a small advice: you may sign your posts by typing four tildas (~} or by clicking on the signature icon in the toolbar above. --Ghirla | talk 08:45, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Signed articles

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Please note that leaving your signature on articles is against Wikipedia guidelines (see Wikipedia:Simplified Ruleset #14). Adding your signature to articles creates a cross-namespace link which someone else has to come along and get rid of later. Refraining from signing articles in the first place will save everyone time.

Thanks again for your contributions.

[edit] Request for edit summary

Hi. I am a bot, and I am writing to you with a request. I would like to ask you, if possible, to use edit summaries a bit more often when you contribute. The reason an edit summary is important is because it allows your fellow contributors to understand what you changed; you can think of it as the "Subject:" line in an email. For your information, your current edit summary usage is 0% for major edits and 0% for minor edits. (Based on the last 150 major and 0 minor edits in the article namespace.)

This is just a suggestion, and I hope that I did not appear impolite. You do not need to reply to this message, but if you would like to give me feedback, you can do so at the feedback page. Thank you, and happy edits, Mathbot 10:31, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Leon Minkus

Hello! I would like to tell you that this is not good. While the article should certainly link to, let's say, harp, it shouldn't link to it three or four times. You should link to the same article few paragraphs later, but not earlier. This makes the article much easier to read. --Missmarple 12:27, 31 March 2006 (UTC) P.S. You did add some useful links though :) Just be careful not to put too many links in an article.

[edit] Pavlova images

I found it interesting that the images you added of Anna Pavlova were tagged indicating that the photographer died within 4 years of taking the photos. Do you have info on the photographer's name and date of death? Or perhaps you used the wrong tag? Just making sure, -- Infrogmation 19:46, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

I fixed it - with this tag - {{PD-USSR}}. The photographer was one fo the old Imperial Ballet photagraphers, usually empolyed to take pictures. It's not copyrighted, but PD-USSR is the best tag, dont ya think? Mrlopez2681 07:51, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject Dance

Hi, I have seen your entry on the talk page of Wikipedia:WikiProject Dance. Welcome here! :-) Please tell me, if I can help. Regards --Roland2 22:59, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Maybe I misunderstand your question, since my answer would simply be, that each page has a talk page, in this case it is Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Dance ;-) I do not know, if there are established templates for ballet. I I must confess, that I know not so much about ballet, I have more relations to traditional folk dancing, especially Austrian folk dancing. Thanks for uploading Image:Fille Mal Gardee -Pas de Chale -Nadia Nerina as Lise & David Blair as Colas -1960.JPG. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

[edit] Sylvia (ballet)

Regarding to your May comments on the (incomplete) history of Sylvia (see Talk:Sylvia (ballet)), I ask: have you found any more information on the 1901 production? You said you were searching. Or: have you found any good sources from which I might add the material you think should be included? I'd be happy to add this. -- Rmrfstar 02:06, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

That'd be great. Add what you want and in what format you want; I'll make sure it's properly formatted and integrated into the article. Thanks! -- Rmrfstar 21:50, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hello!

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I've been trying to finish my userpage in the few minutes I've been able to grab here and there, and I wanted to have time to do a message to you justice.

Yes, I started the Legat article, but I really don't know much about the man and am relying on what I can find on the web to write it. If you know more about him offhand, feel free to take it over! I haven't gotten any further than the first sentence. If you don't have the time, I'd appreciate any info you can give me.

Congrats on the hard work you've done on Marius Petipa; I've noticed how many edits you've been making, and it seems to be quite the project! Good luck with that and any future/ongoing projects.

[edit] Yekaterina Geltzer

You know that I appreciate your work, but still, could you consult WP:NOT? Wikipedia is not an image gallery; we have Wikimedia Commons for storing images. Images are meant to illustrate the text, not the other way. I believe it's wise to expand a stub before adding scores of images to it. Cheers, Ghirla -трёп- 08:48, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Well, the photographs are great. Could we upload them to Wikimedia Commons from where they would be readily available not only in English, but in Spanish, Russian, Swedish, etc Wikipedias? Once you upload a photograph to the Commons, you may use it in any Wikimedia project without re-uploading. --Ghirla -трёп- 15:09, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Paquita -Pas de Trois -Rosella Hightower, Maria Tallchief, Andre Eglevsky -1951.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Paquita -Pas de Trois -Rosella Hightower, Maria Tallchief, Andre Eglevsky -1951.gif. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. [edit] Moving pages

Please never ever move articles without discussion first. Such moves are very ill-advised no matter how certain you are about how good are they, except very few non-controversial cases. [edit] Dune article format

Hey, thanks for contributing the cool Dune images, but they really shouldn't be the main image in an article (if others exist) if only because they make the articles visually unappealing. And moving the adaptation images to their own section is slightly "controversial" (I know, Wiki users like me are nerds) because images are only supposed to be used to illustrate an article, not as a "gallery." Anyway, some of your recent changes end up constituting major article format changes that go against "established" Dune formats and should probably be discussed first on Talk pages. Thanks. [edit] Orphaned fair use images tagged

Further to your note on my talk page, please note that I am not an administrator, so *I* will not be deleting the 2 images that are tagged, but they are in a queue that will be cleared after 7+ days. The images have been around since May or August. If you wish them to be saved, the best way is to add them to an article. As the images are copyrighted and only avaiable under a fair use claim, as orphans they can and should be deleted to prevent possible issues with the copyright holders. If they do get deleted, there is a deletion review process that you can initiate to have them recovered. At this point, it is in your hands.--Gay Cdn (talk) (Contr.) 03:32, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Citing sources

Hi there Mrlopez.

To find out how to cite a book, go to WP:CITE and WP:CTT. Basically, take a template from this page and insert it, with all the details filled in, within <ref></ref> tags, so that it looks like this:

<ref>{{cite book|last=LASTNAME|first=FIRSTNAME|authorlink=FIRST_LAST|coauthors=OPTIONAL|title=TITLE|publisher=PUB|date=YEAR|location=CITY OF PUBLICATION|pages=NO OF PAGES|url=OPTIONAL|doi=OPTIONAL|id=ISBN,OPTIONAL}}</ref>

The capitals tell you where to put what info. Authorlink is the link to the wiki page of that author, if they have one. DOI is the Digital object identifier if the book has one, ISBN is the International Standard Book Number.

Then, to cite the sources at the end of the article, write <references/> and all your citations will appear automagically.

Hope this helps, do ask again if this isn't clear enough!

[edit] Question about image copyright

I see that most of this discussion is about image copyrights. I found this animated GIF: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:CF46618267_109996904033.gif while looking up the difference between a "fouette" and a "pirouette". I had previously come across it on a web page several years ago, and edited it to remove the camera jiggle. Currently I want to illustrate a web page with something or someone rotating, and toyed with the possibility of using this edited GIF. So I was surprised to see it here, and even more surprised to see that the licensing info says "I, the creator of this work, hereby release it into the public domain." That appears to be too good to be true.

What should I do?

Perhaps {{wikify}} would be a better pick. (That template wasn't listed where I was looking. Sorry.) The problem is that articles need to be resemble encyclopedic entries. What we have at your page now is not very encyclopedic. I switch to the other template for you. -Will Pittenger 04:06, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Marius Petipa -Dansomani -1837.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

[edit] Alexandra Feodorovna (Charlotte of Prussia)

I wrote the article about Alexandra Feodorovna (Charlotte of Prussia). I worked really hard on it. There is little information about her and I had to read three books and search many more to do the research. I appreciate the interest you have in the article, but I am sadly surprised about you disliked for the order of the pictures. I looked for them , and uploaded them for the wikipedia. They were placed in cronological order. I amn open to hear your point of view, so please get in touch to my user page Miguelemejia. I chaged they way you set the picture because I found my original distribution, a better one.

[edit] The use of IT's versus ITS

Mr Lopez: While we appreciate your contributions to the Academie Royale article, I have to tell you that you haven't a clue about the difference between these two.

You use I-T-apostrophe-S (It's) only when the sentence could equally well read "It is", since "it's" is a corruption of the longer "it is".

Your use: "Opera company made the theatre it's principal venue" is WRONG because it doesn't make sense reading as "Opera company made the theatre it is principal venue" does it???

You use I-T-NO appostrope-S (Its) only in the POSSESSIVE i.e. when something belongs to something. So, if you always ask yourself if something belongs, then you'll be ok. Again, from the article, an example of your writing:

"believed to have been started by it's gas lighting." -WRONG BECAUSE YOU ARE DEALING WITH THE POSSESSIVE FORM i.e: The gas lighting belongs to the opera house, therefore you should write "ITS".

Got it? We'd rather not keep on having to correct you.... Vivaverdi 01:19, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Rudeness is in the eye of the beholder. If plain blunt speech is "rudeness", then sorry. This has nothing to do with the differences between British and American English usage, but everything to do with proper English grammar. If you follow my guidleines, you'll get it right in future. Remember: IT'S = IT IS and, if you use it in the wrong place, it won't sound right at all. (It just like my use of "won't" in the last sentence: it is/it's a corruption of "will not" with the comma subsituting for the missing letter(s)
And the "we" are the editors who have made corrections on your "Academie" and "Garnier" edits. Lok at the HISTORY list and you'll see that others have done what I did. Vivaverdi 15:32, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair Use Images on your Userpage

Hi. I came across your userpage and you have MANY fair use images that are on it. This is specifically not allowed by Wikipedia as fair use images can only be used in the article namespace, and not user pages. Further, many of these images, once removed from your userpage will be orphans, as they are not used in article space. Orphaned fair use images can be speedily deleted in 7 days after tagging. However, many of these look like good images that could be used in Wikipedia articles. Please go through these images and put them in article, where appropriate, and provide a fair use rationale. I will give you at least a day before I remove the entire section (it would take too much time to go through otherwise) and mark images as orphans, as appropriate. Please understand the fair use policy of Wikipedia before using fair use images in the future. Thank you. --MECUtalk 04:03, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

I had to blank the entire photo section on your userpage, as there were over 25 images and I hadn't gone through 25% of the images yet! Do not use fair use images on your userpage. Restoring the section is fine, but you must remove the fair use images. It's not worth my time to go through and do this, as you are the one who wants it on your userpage and it would take me hours to go through all of them. I feel this is appropriate since you are the one who are in violation of Wikipedia policy. I'm sorry, but this is the only thing I can think to do. --MECUtalk 02:00, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Yes, there is a policy against using fair use images on userpages. See Fair Use under "Policy" and #9. I will copy it here for you: "Fair use images may be used only in the article namespace. Used outside article space, they are not covered under the fair use doctrine. They should never be used on templates (including stub templates and navigation boxes) or on user pages. They should be linked, not inlined, from talk pages when they are the topic of discussion. This is because it is the policy of the Wikimedia Foundation to allow an unfree image only if no free alternative exists and only if it significantly improves the article it is included on. All other uses, even if legal under the fair use clauses of copyright law, should be avoided to keep the use of unfree images to a minimum. Exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis if there is a broad consensus that doing so is necessary to the goal of creating a free encyclopedia (like the templates used as part of the Main Page)." --MECUtalk 02:15, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] My interest in Your images

Dear MrLopez - first I am sorry if I did not understand Your advice how to answer to Your question and I am sorry that I wrote to Your personal page instead of the talk page, it was my mistake... Please know that my interest in Your images is nothing personal, just following to general rules of the Wikipedia. I do not know how to decribe it more in detail, it is just that - no copyrighted pictures are allowed in Wikipedia unless the fair use is clearly proved. As I can see on this page, I am not the first who is interested in poor sourcing of Your rich images collection. Please, continue the talk here, not on my talk page... [edit] I Lombardi alla prima crociata

Hello!

I noticed that you created a redirect from the redlink "Jérusalem" to I Lombardi alla prima crociata. This doesn't make a lot of sense, as the redlinked Jérusalem appeared in the I Lombardi article, and, once you'd turned it into a blue link, anyone reading the article and clicking on it would be (frustratingly) redirected to where they were already were. I don't know if you're familiar with The opera corpus, but the presence of a redlink for Jérusalem there was an indication that members of the Opera Project would at some point be providing a stub or an article for it. I've now done a stub (Jérusalem) and will expand it sometime. A similar case is Rossini's Le siège de Corinthe, which has a redlink to Maometto II, on which it was based, and both of those are listed under Rossini in the corpus. One of these days, someone (possibly me - I have a recording of it) will create a Maometto II article, but, meanwhile, creating a redirect isn't very helpful.

Hope this makes sense! --GuillaumeTell 18:04, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Photo of Russian Royal Family on Nicholas II Page

Heya My name is Sara. I am a historian with a deep dedication to the subject, especially to German and Russian history, including the Romanovs. I just wanted to point out to you that the photo of the Russian Royal Family that you posted on the Nicholas II page is wrongly dated. It is a common misconception for it to be lablled as one of the Alexander Palace Formal shots in 1914, however it is in fact from the Tercentenary shoot of 1913. I haven't changed the attribution myself, but I advise you to do so.

Thanks for the photo and your time! --SaraFL 23:23, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Heya -- I got your message, and thanks for getting back to me!! Well, I have many sources, but I accept that the book you have has 1914, as there were formals in both 1913 and 1914. They are very hard to defreniate between -- the usual give away is the children, who of course, haven't change that much. The other thing is the dresses that the girls are wearing, but just to be difficult, they are all wearing literally indistingushable dresses in the 2 shoots. However, one can see that Maria's and Anastasia's dresses in the 1914 shoot have horizontal patterns of beads across the chest, whereas in the 1913 shoot, no such patterns are seen and the dresses are looser in the chest area. The main tell-tale thing is this: in the photo you posted, Tatiana is wearing a wig (due to her tyhpoid in 1913 and head being shaved), whereas, by 1914 her hair has grown back and is in the bob style. These are my reasons and I think that they point to your photo being taken in 1913, not 1914 Thanks again! --SaraFL 18:50, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Do you think this is suffice historical information for the photo to be from 1913? I hope you change it -- otherwise it's a historical inaccuracy!! --SaraFL 14:19, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:4fzup3.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:4fzup3.jpg. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Thanks for uploading Image:Corsaire -Kirov -Sofia Gumerova.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 48 hours after this notification, per our Fair Use policy.
