[edit] Plot synopsis
Janet Novak (played by guest star, Nicole Sullivan) loses one of her foster children, a two-year old named Tommy, in a park. Tommy is later found by a police officer, unharmed but holding a severed finger. The police call in Monk to unravel the mystery.
Monk quickly discovers that the finger belongs to a missing violinist, who has been kidnapped. His family couldn't say for fear he would be killed. Meanwhile, Tommy has been taken from Janet, and Monk agrees to look after him. Tommy makes Monk happy in a way only Trudy could. Monk wants to adopt him, having bonded with the child and grown to love him, but ultimately decides not to after Tommy begins mimicking his behaviors and eccentricities. Before he gives him up, Tommy helps Monk figure that the finger had been in Janet Novak's purse, and that she and her husband were the kidnappers. The police quickly arrest the Novaks afterwards. Finally, Monk gives up Tommy to a new family, sad to lose him, but happy that he has a good home.
