[edit] Synopsis
When a basketball coach is killed by an apparent accident, three of her team, including Natalie Teeger's daughter Julie, don't believe the official story that it was an accident and hire Adrian Monk to find out who killed her. She had accidentally started a forest fire two weeks before she was killed and was planning to go to the police and confess. If she confessed, her DNA would be taken and it would be found to be similar to a murder two years ago where her brother killed a woman and left his DNA at the scene, and he would be found to be the killer. To fill in for the championship basketball game for the team, Natalie volunteers to become the coach for that game, with Monk as her assistant.
In the third quarter of the game, Natalie is assessed two technical fouls and is ejected, forcing Monk to take over the coaching duties. While Monk bumbles in his attempt to lead the girls to the championship, Natalie discovers clues in the locker room that leads back to the coach's brother. Natalie returns to the court as the team mascot and informs Monk, Stottlemyre and Disher.
Monk's mother had the mantle cleared for a place for a trophy but he never won a single trophy and the mantle remained empty, so even when the girls lost the championship game on a last-second shot, Natalie and Julie got Monk an even 100 trophies for the 104 murders he's solved.
