[edit] Plot synopsis
When Sharona's son, Benjy, looks through a telescope and witnesses a murder in the hotel that he, Sharona and Monk are staying at, he reports the murder to Monk. Believing that Benjy wasn't making it up, he goes to investigate the murder, much to Sharona and the hotel manager's consternation. Monk is teamed up with a hotel security official named Bronwyn to find the culprit. Originally, they think that a seemingly shifty man had killed his wife in the same room Benjy witnessed the murder, but that proves to be a dead end.
As Monk and Bronwyn keep digging into the investigation, he starts picking up clues that point to four maids within the hotel. They also bond, as Bronwynn is one of the few people Monk has encountered to immediately take him at his word in spite of his quirks. Benjy finds a body stuffed into the back of an arcade machine, and Monk deduces it must have been that of a fifth maid. Bronwyn is attacked after discovering some evidence, and it is disposed of by the time she recovers. The body suddenly disappears, and the manager puts pressure on Monk to finish his case or leave immediately. Monk realizes that the maids were stealing financial information from clients at the hotel. They planned to use this information to have their friends and relatives perform insider trading. One of the maids developed a conscience (or got greedy), and the other four killed her in order to keep her from squealing.
Sharona meets a man who she plays tennis with, and goes to a comedy show with him. At the comedy show, Monk shows up, and the comedian uses him and his eccentricities for material.
Not having enough information to charge the maids with murder, Monk, Sharona and Benjy depart. But Monk soon realizes that a display of suitcases has been altered with the inclusion of another bag, and he returns to confront the maids. The security official opens up the trunk to find the dead maid's body, which shocks the manager, Sharona, the official and Benjy.
