"Mr. Monk Meets His Dad" is the ninth episode from the fifth season of the television series Monk. It first aired on November 17, 2006.
[edit] Synopsis
The episode begins with two men talking to each other. The first man, Ben Glaser (Brian Kerwin), drives up to the second man, Kenneth Woods (Tom Everett), in a big rig that he and the other man own. Shortly after Woods accuses Glaser of embezzlement he turns and as he starts to leave, Woods leans over the engine and gets his necktie caught in the fanbelt. Glaser quickly reacts before realizing that this is a perfect opportunity for him to conveniently die, and kicks him off the engine into a hanging position. Therefore, Glaser lets Woods die of strangulation, and dumps his body off the side of a road.
The scene switches to San Francisco in which Natalie is baking Christmas cookies. She gets a call informing her that Jack Monk, Adrian's father, is in jail for resisting arrest over a traffic ticket. Monk gets his father out of jail and reluctantly decides to go with him on his trip to deliver Christmas presents to churches and orphanages.
During the trip, Adrian notices that his father does not really care about him. In fact, Adrian has a half-brother when his father remarried. Adrian's half-brother is named Jack Junior and his father taught him how to ride a bicycle, something which Adrian's father neglected to do. Jack Jr. is apparently a orthopedic surgeon now. Also during the trip, Adrian is suspicious of the redundant routes and the lack of quality of the "toys" (one of the toys is a can of dog food). Later, Adrian discovers that the rig his father is driving is the same one Ben Glaser used to dump the body. Moreover, the rig is equipped with a GPS which records the last 5000 miles. Therefore, Glaser sent Jack Monk on this mission to put him over 5000 miles thereby erasing all evidence connecting him to the crime. Adrian discovers this and has Jack stop the truck when it's at 4998 mileage, but the brakes give out on a steep road and when they finally stop the rig utilizing a run-off the GPS reads at 5002 miles, erasing the memory of the murder, and possibly all evidence against Glaser. At this point, Monk regains his respect for his father and finds out Jack Jr. is a drug addict living in Jack's basement. The Monks later discover that the noise they have been hearing was a piece of Kenneth Woods' tie that got stuck in the engine, and they have the proof they need to arrest Ben Glaser. However, Jack surprises Adrian by buying a bicycle and teaching him how to ride.
