[edit] Plot synopsis

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The opening scene of the episode shows a large silhouette against a window with a baseball bat held over his head. There is a scream of help and agony and then no more. Only moments before, the police get a 911 call from the house where a judge named Catherine Lavinio claims there is someone in the house. She says it's "Dale the Whale". There are screams and then nothing else. The police are baffled because Dale the Whale is an 800 pound man who hasn't left his bed in about 11 years. Dale had a case which he lost and held a grudge against the judge of the case, who was the woman murdered. Dale is the prime suspect, but could not have done the murder. The police, once again, call on Mr. Monk.

It is revealed that Monk's late wife, Trudy, was involved in a 3 year long legal battle with Dale which cost Monk and Trudy money and time. Monk questions Dale and his assistant, Christiaan, about where they were the night before and other police questions. Sharona gets a job at Dale's apartment to dig up more clues and starts to date Christiaan. Monk and Sharona go to the Catherine Lavinio's house to find out what she was cooking that made the fire alarm go off. The house is very messy, which is a fact Mr. Monk is constantly trying to fix.

Mr. Monk looks into her refrigerator and finds a take-home bag and asks why would she cook something when she had take-out. Christiaan's clinic makes a "fat suit". When Monk asks him about who he was named after, he says a famous doctor. Monk reveals that the doctor didn't make that discovery until after the 37-year old Christiaan was born; Christiaan is a fraud. He is really a convict on the loose and says he will testify against Dale the Whale at the court case against him.
