Mr. Monk Goes to Jail is an episode of the television show Monk.
[edit] Plot Synopsis
Ray Kaspo, a death row inmate, is poisoned while eating his final meal and dies. Monk is reluctant to investigate, but his adversary Dale "the Whale" Biederbeck (Tim Curry) asks him to stay and solve the case because the investigation is holding up construction of a window outside his cell. Dale promises to share a clue to the murder of Monk's wife Trudy if he is able to solve the case.
Monk poses as Ben Lincoln, who is doing five years for embezzlement. He is put in a cell with Darnell "Spyder" Rudner (Danny Trejo), who Monk was told had a connection to Kaspo. Rudner's watch is missing, and Spyder offers to tell Monk anything if he find it for him. A violent offender, Spyder doesn't initially trust Monk and even threatens his life, but thanks to Monk's obsessiveness for cleaning (he cleans the shiv Spyder threatens to cut Adrian with), the two become friends.
Monk discovers that the culprit is Sylvia Fairborn (Kathy Baker), a prison social worker. Kaspo was only an intermediary; her real target was a reclusive millionaire who was suing her son for libel. Kaspo was donating his organs after his execution, and the millionaire was awaiting a crucial kidney transplant. By poisoning Kaspo, she ruined his kidneys and prevented the millionaire from receiving them. Upon figuring it out, Monk is pursued by a gang of neo-Nazis, and is saved by Spyder Rudner, who is already aware of Monk's real identity as an undercover cop. Monk promises to come back and put in a good word when Spyder is up for parole in 15 years. Once he gets his window, Dale keeps his end of the bargain by giving Monk two important clues. First, the bomb that killed Trudy was indeed intended for her and not Monk. Second, a man named Warrick Tennyson, who was involved in the murder, can be found in New York City. The episode and the season end with Monk, Sharona, Capt. Stottlemeyer and Lt. Disher heading to New York to confront Tennyson.
