[edit] Plot synopsis

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

On Halloween, an armored car driver is shot with his own gun by a mild-mannered man. Nothing is stolen, so the police are stumped. While Monk is investigating, his brother Ambrose Monk (played by John Turturro) calls to tell him their father is returning home after a long absence. After Monk, Natalie, and Julie arrive at Ambrose's house, a trick-or-treater dressed as Frankenstein's monster tries to steal all of Ambrose's candy. Unsuccessful, he then steals candy from a group of kids. Monk realizes that all who had candy stolen had been to Ambrose's house.

It turns out the armored car driver had been poisoned, and Paul Gilstrap, one of Ambrose's neighbors, had been caught returning the same poison to the lab where he works — he had laced his wife's favorite candy (Neptune bars) at the store in attempt to kill her without drawing suspicion to himself, but his being discovered at the lab ruined his plans and now he was trying to recover all the poisoned candy (a little too late for the armored car guard). Meanwhile, Ambrose gets upset as it becomes clear to him that their father is not returning after all, and he eats a Neptune bar. He begins to feel sick and they rush him to the hospital, but it wasn't the poisoned bar he ate after all — just one eleven months past its expiration date. Stottlemeyer and Disher apprehend Gilstrap, and as the Monk brothers return home, they find a note from Mr. Monk, senior.
