Kravitz wrote the song inspired in a situation that himself was involved in. Kravitz said that he wanted to get a cab for getting to the studio to record, but no driver stopped to let Kravitz get in. Although the song deals with racism and discrimination, he expresses it with sense of humor. [1]

The music video for Mr. Cab Driver, directed by Geoff Barish, features Kravitz in a similar situation of the song's topic. The music video was shot in the streets of New York.
