The newspaper's mission is "To build community and strengthen democracy by serving an active, thoughtful readership at the local level – where the impact of citizen action is greatest." [1]

Columns include: News (with heavy focus on Buncombe County Commission and Asheville City Council), Opinion & Letters, Arts & Entertainment, Culture Watch (local culture news and views), Cranky Hanke (movie reviews from noted film critic and author Ken Hanke), Food and Drink, Features, Top Drawer (fashion), Outdoors and Gardening.
