Mountain Soul, the eleventh album by Patty Loveless, found her returning to real roots music after the less than successful experiment at pop music on Strong Heart. Also unlike her previous real country albums, this was an acoustic-based all-bluegrass effort. With a host of guest stars performing backup duties, this may have been her best album in years, if not indeed the best of her career. The music is as real as it gets, bringing to mind visions of life in her native Eastern Kentucky coal-mining region. Replete with the sound of fiddles, mandolins, and banjos, the album is a stark (and very welcome) departure from the electric instrumentation and highly produced works of her earlier albums. The current atmosphere at so-called "country" radio avoided it almost completely, so there were no real hits, although most of the material was better than anything heard nowadays on the air. Even without hits or airplay, the album did quite well, hitting #19 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. Highlights include "The Richest Fool Alive" and "Sorrowful Angels." There a two duets with Travis Tritt: "Out of Control Raging Fire," and "I Know You're Married (But I Love You Anyway)". Another duet is "Someone I Used to Know" with Jon Randall. There is also a re-recorded version of "Sounds of Loneliness," a tune first heard on Loveless' self-titled début album, Patty Loveless, and written when she was still known as Patty Ramey.
