The MountainLair, or Mountainlair, commonly called "the Lair" by students, is the three floor student union building at West Virginia University. The building offers many services to students including an information desk, lounges, a United States Post Office, movie theater, bowling alley, pool hall, video game arcade, and a sit-down restaurant known as "Hatfields." Wireless internet access is available to students and faculty throughout the building (in addition to other spots on campus). A large parking garage is attached to the rear of the building and serves as the fountation for the Mountainlair Plaza, a large outdoor recreation area with tables, benches, basketball courts, and an area of astroturf for sports which underwent massive renovations beginning in 2004.
There is also a large food court and commons area in the Mountainlair where many students go between classes to eat, socialize, or study. As of 2007, fast food style restaurants in the food court are: Sbarro, Freshens, McCoys, Peking Express, and Burger King. In addition to these restaurants, there is a convenience store located in the MountainLair known as J.A.C.S. (which stands for Just Another Convenience Store), and a small pub called the Side Pocket Pub, located adjacent to the pool hall.
Along with the recreational facilities listed above, the Mountainlair is also home to a large events ballroom, several meeting and conference rooms, and many administrative offices of the university. These offices are:
- Career Service Center
- Dining Services Offices
- Financial Aid Office
- MountainLair Administrative Office
- Office of Arts and Entertainment
- Office of Disability Services
- Scholars Office
- Student Organizations Services
- Technical Support Center
- U92 Campus Radio Station (WWVU-FM 97.1)
In addition, The Student Government Association (SGA) and other student organizations of special interest hold offices in the Student Organization Wing (SOW) of the Mountainlair, including the Hockey Club, Muslim Student Organizations, and Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity. The Mountainlair is also home to the campus bookstore and university shop where textbooks and university apparel may be purchased. The bookstore is managed and stocked by Barnes and Noble.
The main building is open every day during the Fall and Spring academic semesters and most days during the summer academic sessions and recesses.
