Mount Washington Auto Road
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mount Washington Auto Road is a 7.6 mile (12.2 km) toll road that extends from New Hampshire Route 16 in Pinkham Notch to the summit of Mount Washington in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. It rises 1,421 metres (4,618 feet) from an altitude of 470 metres (1,527 feet) at the bottom to 1,891 metres (6,145 feet) at the top, an average gradient of 11.6%.
[edit] Weather Sensors
The road has several sensors at various altitudes on it. These sensors measure temperatures. http://www.mountwashington.org/weather/arvtp/
[edit] Events
Every year in June, the mountain road is host to the Mount Washington Road Race, an event which attracts hundreds of runners.
In August the mountain road hosts the Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb, a bicycle race that runs the same route as the road race. The race's most notable victor to date has been former Tour de France contender Tyler Hamilton.
Another event, although not a race, is the annual MINIs On Top event. Now in its fifth year, the drive to the summit began with 73 MINI Cooper and Cooper S vehicles and now exceeds 200 cars. The only reason more MINIs don't drive to the summit is the fact there's not enough space to hold all the cars ~ despite their diminutive size! MINIs On Top (or MOT) is held the Saturday of Father's Day weekend every June.
