Mount Lawley, Western Australia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mount Lawley is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia. The majority of the suburb lies in the Local Government Area of the City of Stirling and small portions lie in the Town of Vincent and City of Bayswater. In 2006 the Town of Vincent applied to the Local Government Advisory Board to absorb all of Mount Lawley into its boundaries but this was ultimately turned down.
Mount Lawley was named in honour of Sir Arthur Lawley, the Governor of Western Australia from May 1901 to August 1902. His wife, Lady Annie Lawley, agreed to the naming of the then bushland in her husband's name on the condition that no licensed hotels be built in the suburb.[1]
Its post code is 6050.

[edit] Character and lifestyle
Mount Lawley is an exclusive residential suburb for established wealthy and professional families. It is one of the only suburbs in close proximity to the Perth CBD to predominantly have houses with full size quarter acre blocks. Many of the original "Federation", Art Deco and Californian Bungalow manors have been well maintained or restored, giving an historical ambience to many streets - although contempory homes and units are common. For these reasons, Mount Lawley is considered the most presigious of the inner suburban region.
It has a diverse range of shopping facilities, cafes and award winning restaurants. A diverse range of primary, secondary and adult education facilities as well as private hospitals and aged care facilities fall within this suburb. The southeastern corner of the suburb borders the Swan River, stretching through to Hyde Park.
The suburb has a number of sporting facilities, and lifestyle attractions for residents, including a trendy cafe strip centred on Beaufort and Walcott Streets; arguably the city's best video/DVD hire & sale outlet (Planet Video); the Astor Cinema which shows a mixture of box-office hits and art house/feature films; plus conveniences such as a 24-hour chemist and 24-hour gourmet supermarket.
[edit] Public Transport
It is well-serviced by public transport Bus & Rail services.
[edit] Schools
The suburb is home to Mount Lawley Senior High School (MLSHS), a state school which opened in 1955 which was extensively renovated with $40 million of Government funding in 2005-06. The school offers specialist programmes in music, performing arts and languages. In addition to MLSHS, the suburb hosts the exclusive Anglican girls school Perth College, a private K-12 campus for both day and boarding students.
