[edit] History

Queen hills Girls School was first opened on March 11, 1895, in a rented building known as ‘Arcadia’ below the Chowrasta. Its Founder and its Principal was Miss Emma L. Knowles, an educational missionary under the Women’s Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Miss Knowles had already spent a number of years in India as Principal of schools for European Girls at Nainatal and at Calcutta.

She felt the need of a similar school in the hills of Darjeeling. Her conviction that it was God’s will helped her to initiate the first move. The Mission Board at home gave their approval to the plan but did not promise any financial assistance.

Miss Knowles borrowed from a friend one thousand rupees for furnishings, used her salary to pay the rent for a building and opened the school with thirteen pupils. Two years later it was recognized by the Education Department as a Lower Secondary School and received a grant.
