My interests include wildlife, canals, railways, motorcycles, modern languages and photography.

My wildlife interests include birds such as wagtails, kinglets and redstarts. Kinglets are a nice challenge to photograph because they can let you get quite close to them but I have never known them to keep still! I have photographed the Madeira Firecrest in its native habitat and I have added to Wikipedia articles about this bird in both english and german. I also like photographing butterflies.

I call myself Motacilla because I like wagtails. The pied wagtail is one of my favourite birds because it seems able to survive by eating dead insects from the surface of car parks, and it always looks cheerful even when living in miserable places. Sometimes pied wagtails have very scruffy plumage but they still look happy. Also the pied wagtail has different races with distinctly different plumage, but they live together as one species and seem to get along alright!

I ride Norton motorcycles. I would ride my BSA, Matchless and MZ machines as well, if only I could make them work! Yes, I do worry that riding old motorcycles ruins my carbon footprint. I travel by pedal cycle as much as I can, but I reserve the right to be a little bit inconsistent!

I like motorcycle touring: preferably through countries whose languages I am trying to learn. Combine this with an historic, obsolete and potentially unreliable machine and you get a meandering, unpredictable but very interesting holiday!

I am fluent in english, fairly good at german, get by in french and know rudimentary spanish, polish and russian. If you send me a message in german or french please keep it simple so that I can understand!
