Motuihe Island

Motuihe Island lies between Motutapu and Waiheke islands in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand. Now a protected reserve for rare and endangered bird and insect species, it has been used in the past as a farm, as a quarantine station and an internment camp for Germans in World War I. The most famous prisoner was Count Felix von Luckner and his crew of the "Seeadler", who escaped in 1917, took over a scow and sailed to the Kermadec Islands where they were recaptured. Following WWII the Royal New Zealand Navy recruit training establishment, HMNZS TAMAKI, was based on the NE tip of the island. It remained operational until it was moved to Devonport about 1978.
The island has sheltered beaches and can be visited by ferry from Auckland 11 km distant.
