Motorola MPx220

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Motorola MPx 220 is an updated version of their MPx200 smartphone. It resolves the main issue of its predecessor by updating the OS to Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 Phone Edition. This is Motorola's first quad band Windows Mobile Smartphone. This clamshell-style smartphone sports a 1.23 megapixel camera with flash, Bluetooth, dual color displays, internal antenna, speakerphone, and 32 MB of memory plus a miniSD memory card slot. Cingular is the only carrier that sells this phone in the United States. It was available at first in a silver color, and then later a black version was available to the European region. It was well known as the Smartphone with the fastest processor at the time of its sale.

[edit] Unique Features

Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition lacked a graphical control panel common to cell phones. The Asian region MPx220 has the Launcher software bundled with the system which addresses this problem, providing a grided menu mapped to the number keys. The software is not a common feature to the Windows Mobile family. The Asian distributor also bundled a Smartphone Starter Pack which includes an EagleTec manufactured 128MB mini-SDCard and a software CD with the Launcher software and other applications.

[edit] Criticisms

  • Poor voice quality
  • Slow start-up times
  • MP3 playback unstable if accessed from memory card

(the above are prior to the software upgrade from Motorola)

  • Plastic battery cover breaks easily
  • Grainy, dim camera quality
  • Windows Media 9 (Hacks have made it possible to install Windows Media 10)
  • Not Upgradeable to the new Windows Mobile 5.0 OS
  • miniSD support up to 1GB

[edit] Quality Issues

When the MPx220 first went on sale to the public, there were numerous reports of devices not turning on, missing audio during conversations, Windows freeze-up, in addition to various abnormal behavior attributed to problems with the operating system. Though Motorola provided downloadable upgrades (at first only available through HelloMoto stores for the Hong Kong region), the phone had garnered a negative name among early adopters and potential buyers. The upgrades for the network locked models are not compatible with the unlocked ones. Another common problem is a motherboard component breaking down, leading to the connector unresponsive to both the data cable and the AC adapter, making the phone impossible to charge and unable to connect to a PC. Motorola did not issue a recall of the devices, nor post any formal notice on the issue, and provided case-by-case repairs for affected customers. The MPx220 was created by Chi Mei, a Taiwanese Original Design Manufacturer (ODM). Some users attribute this to be a cause of the poor build quality that is inconsistent to the Motorola brand.
