"Motorhead" (sample ) is a song written by Lemmy while in Hawkwind, it was his last before leaving the band. The song first appeared on the B-side of Hawkwind's 1974 single "Kings of Speed" single, released on United Artists.[1]
"Motorhead" was recorded and released by Motörhead as a 7" vinyl single in June 1977, initially issued with the 'Map Of Chiswick' label, later it was switched to the 'Big Beat' label and pressed in other formats.[2] The reverse cover is taken up almost entirely with the song's lyrics, printed in a lowercase form of blackletter. Most of the original vinyls have the words "a porky prime cut" inscribed on the disc, near the label, a variety of supporting messages also appear. Chiswick also released a special 12" vinyl edition which was limited to 12,500 copies, it has the same sleeve, tracks and catalogue number - Chiswick S13.[3]
On April 28, 1979 Lemmy was interviewed by John Tobler on BBC Radio 1's 'Rock On Saturday' show, "Motorhead", "Leaving Here" and "Limb From Limb" were played.[2]
In September 1979 Chiswick released a 7" vinyl picture disc in two pressings, black & white, and blue & white as well as single colour pressings in black, blue, pink, orange and white vinyl - catalogued Big Beat NSP13 and NS13 respectively.[3]
In 1981, a live recording, "Motorhead (live)" was released as a single and reached #6 in the UK Singles Charts.[3]
Hawkind included performances of the song their 1981 single and 12" EP "Motorhead/Valium Ten", the 1983 single "Motorway City/Master of the Universe" and the 1986 single "Motorhead/Hurry on Sundown", all released on Flicknife Records.[1]
In 1988 Castle Communications released a 3" CD single of four Motörhead tracks, the inserts states track three is "Motorhead" but actually plays "Jailbait", the edition was limited to 5,000 copies.[2]
In 1992 the song was added to the Dojo CD re-issues of Hawkind's Warrior on the Edge of Time album, as did Griffin in 1994.[1]
