[edit] Notable players
The NHL Lockout
The team got a major boost during their first year when the 2004-2005 NHL lockout officially started. The team signed Detroit Red Wings players Chris Chelios, Derian Hatcher, and Kris Draper. This happened because Derian Hatcher knew the team was playing at Great Lakes Sports City Superior Arena where he often played growing up. Unfortunately because of visa problems Kris Draper never played a game for the Mechanics. Later on they also signed Bryan Smolinski and Sean Avery and were able to roll 4 NHL players on their opponents. All of the players had some experience or connection to the area.
The Assembly Line
The Assembly Line consists of 3 players. The great line of Adam Edinger, Peter Szabo and Brent Gretzky achieved the name on March 3rd. “The Assembly Line” was submitted along with hundreds of others but won out on the Mechanics' website vote by an astonishing margin. The other three final entries were, “Pit Crew,” “Engine Line” and “Motor City Drive Train.” The winning name was submitted by David Bolam. Press Article
