Motilal Nehru National Institute Of Technology (MNNIT) is one of the twenty National Institutes of Technologies in India, located in the city of Allahabad in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It was formerly known as Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College and was affiliated to University of Allahabad. In a recent survey by Dataquest magazine in collaboration with NASSCOM, the institute was ranked 12th all over India [1].

Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College was established in year 1961 as a joint enterprise of the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh in accordance with the scheme of establishment of Regional Engineering Colleges. The foundation stone of the college was laid by the first Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru on May 3, 1961. The college was named after his father and Indian freedom fighter, Motilal Nehru.

The main building of college was inaugurated by Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on April 18, 1965. With effect from June 26, 2002, the college became a deemed university and is now known as Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology.

The college initially offered Bachelor Programmes in the conventional disciplines of Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. After consolidating these courses, an undergraduate program in Computer Science was started during the academic year 1976-77. Subsequently, in 1982-83, undergraduate programmes in Electronics Engineering and Production and Industrial Engineering were started.

Post Graduate Courses were introduced in 1970-71 by starting M.E. programmes in all Engineering departments. The institute currently offers 13 M.Tech. programmes and an M.C.A. programme and also accepts candidates for Ph.D. degrees.

In 1996-97, the institute also started to offer a two year / four semesters Post Graduate Degree in Management Studies.

The institute also boasts of being the first institute in India to start a course in B.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering in the year 1984.

Recently, the institute has also added Bachelor Programmes in Chemical Engineering and BioTechnology.

The college has been recognised by AICTE as a centre for the Quality Improvement Programme. In 1972, the college initiated a project and established an industrial estate with 68 sheds with the objective of encouraging entrepreneurs and creating additional revenue. The college has also been a member of Indo-UK REC Project, in the area of design. Under this scheme, a Design Center has been established at a cost of about Six Crore Rupees, which offers training and consultancy in various areas.

MNNIT is situated at a site spreading over 222 acres on the bank of the river Ganges.

MNNIT is fully residential institution with seven hostels for boys and two for girls. One hostel is exclusively for post graduate students. The capacity of boys hostel is 1800 (1044 single seated rooms and 252 triple seated rooms ) and that of girls hostel is 145. Room allotment is done in such a way that students from different parts of country freely intermingle with each other depicting national integration. A 100 Mbit/s Local Area Network (LAN) integrates the entire college campus and the hostels. This LAN offers 24 hour internet connectivity.

Other buildings on the campus include Computer Center, Central Library, CAD lab, Geo Lab, Concrete Lab, heat engine lab, electrical machines lab, virtual instrumentation lab, mechanical workshop, Multi purpose hall, conference and seminar hall.

The library subscribes to 68 Indian and 200 International technical periodicals. Many journals are available as well.

It is among the few technical institutions in India to have a supercomputer, Param 10000.

The institute offers nine courses at the B.Tech level and 15 M. Tech courses. It also enrols Ph. D. and management candidates. The Computer Science department also offers MCA. This institute was the first in the country to offer an undergraduate programme in Computer Science and Engineering.

Apart from Indian students, candidates from many countries such as Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Mauritius, Malaysia, Iran, Yemen, Iraq, Palestine and Thailand also join MNNIT for various undergraduate and post-graduate programs.
