[edit] The Beginnings of Mossimo

Established in 1986 by Mossimo Gianulli, the company started out as a volleyball shorts brand, as its designer sold his brand to retailers along the South California coast.

In the late eighties/early nineties, Mossimo's sales spread into the southeastern states when veteran sales rep Mark Andrews Rose persuaded the young company to give him the territory and a chance to expand their market.

[edit] Recent Developments

Recently, the company has experienced financial difficulties. However, one major retailer of Mossimo is Target Stores, a very popular discount store chain based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The brand was also available at Zellers for Canadians, however in the Spring of 2006 it was discontinued due to low sales. Drawing from many cultural influences, the brand became an interesting blend of street, urban and sport styles. This has allowed the brand to become very popular amongst young Australians . The brand has remained a prominent brand catering to the youth market.

Mossimo was acquired by Iconix Brand Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: ICON, http://www.iconixbrand.com/) on November 1, 2006. For each share of Mossimo, shareholders received 0.2271139 share of Iconix and $4.25 in cash.
