The story begins in the Mossflower Wood, where a community of animals suffers under the tyranny of a ruling wildcat. When a mouse from afar, Martin the Warrior, comes to Mossflower Woods having recently escaped from Fort Marshank,he is soon captured and brought to Corim, he later finds out that this place is being ruled by the Lord Thousand Eyes and his daughter and son. Verdauga Greeneyes, who resides in the castle Kotir. After getting into a fight with one of Verdauga's troops, Martin is imprisoned, where he meets Gonff the Mousethief. Verdauga's daughter, Tsarmina, poisons the tyrant, and blames it on her brother Gingevere. She thrusts her brother into prison, takes over the throne for herself, and breaks Martin's sword. Abbes Germaine and the surviving members of Loamhedge, an abbey stricken with the Great Sickness, arrive to join the woodlanders. Martin and Gonff escape with help from the Corim, Committee Of Resitance In Mossflower, and join with Dinny the mole and Log-a-Log of the Guosim, on a quest to find Boar the Fighter, Badger Lord of Salamandastron. Bella of Brockhall, Boar's daughter, believed only Martin could defeat Tsarmina.

After a journey through Bat Mountpit and the Toadlands, the companions reach the mountain to meet Boar the Fighter. Boar then reforges Martin's broken sword with metal from a meteorite, but he unfortunately dies in combat while killing his mortal enemy Ripfang, who was planning to siege Salamandastron. Ripfang's former slaves (including Martin's childhood friend Timballisto) take over his ship, Bloodwake, with the help from Martin and his allies and return to Mossflower Woods, where Martin kills Tsarmina and destroys Kotir, bringing peace to Mossflower Woods once again. From the ruins of Kotir would eventually rise what would later become Redwall Abbey.
