Mosque of Uqba

Mosque of Uqba (Arabic: جامع عقبة) is a mosque located in Kairouan, Tunisia. Built in 670C.E.,it is one of the oldest mosques in Africa.
The mosque was built by Uqba ibn Nafi after establishing the city of Kairouan. The minaret of the mosque was added in 724-727C.E. and is considered to be one of the most beautiful architectural works of the early Islamic period. Derived from the design of converted church towers in Syria, it is also one of the first minarets that was purpose built.
