The Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture is one of the largest educational institutions in Russia. Established in Moscow in 1832, it vies with the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts for the title of the largest school in the country.
It was established in 1832 by Egor Makovsky and A.S. Yastrebilov as the "Natural Class"; it was renamed the "Art Class" in 1833. From 1843-1866, it was known as the "School of Painting and Sculpturing of Moscow Art Society".
In 1865, it merged with the Palace Architectural School. In 1918 the school was transformed into the "Second State Free Art Studios". Later it became two universities: Surikov Moscow Art Institute (Московский Художественный Институт имени Сурикова) named after Vasily Surikov and Moscow Institute for Architecture (Московский Архитектурный Институт).
More democratic in comparison with the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, the school played an important role in developing Russian national realistic art in the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
Alumni of the school include: Léopold Survage, Vasily Perov, A.K. Savrasov, Illarion Pryanishnikov, Vladimir Makovsky, Isaac Levitan, S.A. and K.A. Korovin, Abram Arkhipov and Mikhail Nesterov.
Former faculty include artists such as Vasily Polenov and Valentin Serov
