The code above produces the result on the right. Fields that are left blank aren't shown in the resulting box. —Locke Cole • tc 04:11, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Real name

The realname parameter is only used on Scorpions character page for the moment and I'm tempted to remove the variable. Do any of the other characters have real names that could be displayed as well (or is there some other objections to removing this)? —Locke Cole • tc 04:15, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Please do. While we're at it, I think removing the age, height, and weight statistics would eliminate the editors constantly wasting their time and effort on edit warring over such ridiculous bullpoop. Seriously, every time I see it on my watchlist I want to tear my hair out. dfg 00:24, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Slight order change

I'm shifting "Weapons" below "Fighting styles", with the rationale being that the weapon is usually secondary to the fighting style (for example, in MKD, you shift through two fighting styles before you get to the weapon). Not only that, but usually the characters aren't identified by their weapons (with some exceptions, like Mileena's sais and Kabal's hookswords).

I don't think this is too objectionable a modification, but I figured it'd be easier to explain the edit all verbose-like here rather than compressing everything into an edit summary. :) EVula 15:40, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Removing fields

I propose we drop the following fields from the infobox:

  • realname
  • age
  • height
  • weight
  • resides

Why? For starters, some of them (like realname and resides) aren't really used anywhere. The others (height, weight, and age) are very difficult to verify. Not only that, but they usually have very little relevance to the game series at all (gameplay doesn't change by Sonya being 25 instead of 27). More often than not, they keep getting edited by anon users, who almost never cite a source for the change.

I say we ditch the specific stats and mention things like age in the article (where relevant and easily verifiable, such as Kitana's age being 10,000+ years). Anyone else want to weigh in? I volunteer to make all necessary changes (both to the template and to all the articles that use it). EVula 19:58, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

I think we have to get rid of the age, height and weight categories, mainly because as you said it is difficult to verify, but also there is someone who is going about MK articles, Family Guy articles, Simpson articles and American Dad! articles changing details in those three catagories. Go onto the Li Mei article, click on history, and you will see I have been constantly reverting his edits. I have tried to get him banned, but his proxy makes this impossible to my knowledge. Anyway, back to the subject, I agree with the age, height and weigh, but I think realname should stay, for the sake of other people, such as Scorpion, although I remember we had trouble with this 'Korey Frost' nonsense with Sub. Personally I think that realname should stay. As for resides, personally I think where they live is irrelevant, only a few people actually have a fixed place, and even then it isn't used, I mean look at the Sub Zero article. So, to sum up, I say get rid of them all except realname. The Haunted Angel 21:20, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
I agree that these fields should be removed. Only a few articles use them, and some of the information is outdated, speculation, or listed as unknown. A character’s realname can be mentioned in the first line of their article (as is already the case in some - e.g. Jax, Johnny Cage), and if a character’s age is relevant (e.g. Goro, Kitana), it can be mentioned in their "About..." section. RobWill80 22:05, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
IMO, we should drop all of those plus the Allies and Enemies fields (which are also subject to extensive anon editing). Enough of the characters lack a "real name" different from their game name that any character for which that is true should just have it integrated into the article. Technically the Allies/Enemies info is verifiable, but it changes with each game and tends to be subject to people adding in allies of allies/enemies of enemies/etc. to them. Come to think of it, unless the Alignment field gets fleshed out in the Armageddon kards (IMO, doubtful), that might also be something to be dropped. Virogtheconq 23:06, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
What I'd like to do (eventually, not today) is institute actual references sections for every character article; once that is done, we can summarily revert unsourced changes to the alignment. Like you said, after Armageddon comes out, we can make a better judgement call about that (perhaps the game guide will list stats like that, which will make discussions very cut-and-dry).
Here's what I'm doing:
  • Putting each character's real name in the article intro (and creating subsequent redirects where needed), and removing the realname element;
  • Removing age, height, weight, and resides entirely, making a notation about age where relevant;
  • Leaving alignment in place until Armageddon comes out, at which point we'll revisit it.
Eventually, I'd like to turn the Allies/Enemies portion into an actual section of the article, where we can map out relationships across the numerous games (at which point we could probably remove the section from the infobox). That will require just a bit more work than I'm willing to do right now, and it would probably be best if we got the project's attention on such a push (what little attention they pay...). For now, we can just leave it in place.
That work for everyone? I hope so, 'cause I'm about to do it. ;) EVula 15:42, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

That sounds great to me, I particularly like the idea of replacing the Allies/Enemies field and instead create a section for it where things can be better explained, such as Smoke's past with both Sub-Zero's, although now he fights with the Elder, against the younger, where in the past he fought with the younger against his clan, who were aiming to turn him into a cyborg, which he is now anyway. Ah, the irony. Anyway, I'll stop rambling. When you get around to cutting out the Allies/Enemies field, let me know and I'll help out, but I may as well start some work on it right now anyway, can anyone think of any reasons why we shouldn't? The Haunted Angel 15:59, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Oh, feel free to start working on it now; I was just saying that I wasn't going to set it up in my massive sweep through the character pages (Ashrah through Johnny Cage so far...). Once I get done with this, I think I'll be done editing for the day. ;) EVula 16:44, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

It'll take some time, but I'll get it started and work through it today. The Haunted Angel 16:48, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

My knowledge of character relationships mostly spans the earlier MK games, so I think the best thing I can do is say "Good luck with it". However, if I know of anything that can be expanded on, I'll try and help out. RobWill80 17:51, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
