Mortons Gap, Kentucky

Mortons Gap is a city in Hopkins County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 952 at the 2000 census. The town is named for Thomas Morton, who settled the area in 1804.[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 952 people, 396 households, and 283 families residing in the city. The population density was 382.9/km² (987.4/mi²). There were 447 housing units at an average density of 179.8/km² (463.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.59% White, 3.26% Black or African American, 0.11% Asian, 0.32% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.21% of the population.

There were 396 households out of which 27.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% were married couples living together, 13.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 26.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.87.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 88.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $27,031, and the median income for a family was $34,276. Males had a median income of $28,333 versus $17,105 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,875. About 10.9% of families and 13.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.4% of those under age 18 and 10.3% of those age 65 or over.
