The elm hybrid cultivar Morton Stalwart Commendation™ is a Morton Arboretum selection, derived from a controlled crossing of the Accolade™ hybrid with a hybrid of the Siberian Elm U. pumila and a selection of Field Elm U. minor from eastern Russia. Commendation™ is vigorous and robust, with upright branches supporting relatively large leaves. The tree is highly tolerant of drought but, like some of the other Morton introductions, can be readily defoliated by the elm leaf beetle, Japanese beetle and Gypsy moth. Commendation™ is being promoted by the Chicagoland Grows corporation.
