Morton Fried

Morton Herbert Fried (March 21, 1923 - December 1986) , was a distinguished Professor of Anthropology at Columbia University in New York City from the early 1960s to 1986, and a prominent anthropologist of the twentieth century. He made considerable contributions to the fields of social and political theory and neo-evolutionism.


After enlisting in the U.S. Army and serving in World War II, Fried attended Columbia College, and went on to earn his M.A. and Ph.D. in Anthropology at Columbia University. He was married to Martha Nemes, and had two children.
