Mormaer of Menteith

The Mormaer or Mormaerdom of Menteith was, after the Mormaerdom of Buchan, the first Mormaerdom in the High Medieval Kingdom of the Scots to pass into the hands of a foreign family, likewise the Comyns. The first Mormaer is usually regarded as Gille Críst, simply because he is the earliest on record. The last was Muireadhach II, who died in 1234, passing his Mormaerdom to his daughter Isabella, and through her marriage, to his French son-in-law, Walter Comyn, Lord of Badenoch.
