Morgan Morgan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Colonel Morgan Morgan, born Nov. 1st, 1688 in Wales. He is traditionally said to have founded the first permenent white settlement in present day West Virginia, though a German town is discovered to have been in existance prior to Morgan's arrival. He is usually said to have arrived in present day West Virginia in 1727, though he is found to have been living in Delaware at that time where he was acting as coroner of New Castle Co. He didn't arrive in West Virginia until 1731.
He is said to have been an ordained clergyman but there is no evidence to support this. However, Morgan did help in the establishment of West Virginia's first church.
He had eight children with his wife Catherine Garretson. His son David became famous as an Indian fighter due to an encounter with Delaware natives at his homestead. Another son Zackquill founded Morgantown, West Virginia.
Francis Harrison Pierpont, governor of Virginia and later West Virginia, was a descendant of Morgan Morgan.
Morgan is often claimed to be a son of Charles Morgan, but there is absoltely no evidence and its probably not true. He is also often claimed to be a relative of Daniel Boone but again, there is no proof.
