From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Morell Coordinates: 46°25′0″N, 62°42′0″W is a village located in Kings County in eastern Prince Edward Island just east of Bristol. Prince Edward Island is Canada`s smallest province. The attractive community of Morell is located on St. Peter’s Bay, two kilometres inland from the salt water shores of the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the Bays & Dunes region, a "green tourism" area of the Island, about thirty minutes from the city of Charlottetown. It relies on farming (wild blueberry farms), fishing (Mussels), and tourism (summer vacationers who frequent Inns and B&Bs). Incorporated in 1953, the community covers a land area of 1.27 sq. km and has a permanent population of 336. Vacationers account for an increase in the summer population. There are 90 Census families in the village. Most of the area residents are of Scottish, English, Irish, or French descent. But, the first inhabitants of the community of Morell were of a tribe known as the “Shell Fish Eaters”, followed by the Mi’kmaq. The Morell River was known to the Mi'kmaq as Pogooseemkekseboo, meaning “clam ground river”. The community was named for Jean Francois Morel who settled in the area in 1720-21 having arrived from St. Malo, France. It is well-known for its berry festival in July, and its nearby Crowbush Golf & Beach Resort, the only five-star resort in Atlantic Canada. Many community-minded artists and writers live in this quiet and peaceful part of Prince Edward Island. The area has both liberal and conservative political representation, although there is a generally tolerant, moderate to politically progressive tendency in this community and on Prince Edward Island in general. Education levels reflect the provincial average with a slightly higher level of university educated graduates, while income levels are again, slightly above the provincial average. The village has the usual basic amenities of a general store, supermarket, restaurants, post office, marina, service station, provincial library, fire and police services, pharmacy, health clinic including doctor and dentist, fitness centre/gym, childcare centre, K-12 schools, catholic/united churches, artist studios, B&Bs, and a public internet site. Most summer visitors, cottagers, or people "from away" as they say are from Ontario, Quebec, and the New England area of the US. Europeans also frequent the area. Prince Edward Island is world renowned for its stunning beaches.
