[edit] Role in The Series

Mordeth first appeared in The Eye of the World when the main charactors goes to Shadar Logoth. He lures Matrim Cauthon and Rand al'Thor into an underground chamber full of cursed treasure. After a brief scuffle between them, the two boys flee, but Mat steals a ruby hilted dagger, and doesn't reveal it until it is too late.

Mat takes the dagger out of Shadar Logoth, thus releasing it's evil into the world. Mordeth's soul has possessed the dagger so that it is tainted, but before Moiraine realises this, it is too late, and the dagger has bound itself to Mat. The bond will eventually kill him if he does not reach Tar Valon in time for the Aes Sedai to heal him.

Later, Padan Fain steals the dagger and it binds itself to him the same way it did to Mat. Eventually, Mordeth comes to possess Fain and makes himself a part of him, due to Fain's extensive exposure to the dagger's ancient evil. Fain creates a new alias for himself; Ordeith.
