Status is disputed with Grand Rabbi Ben Zion Aryeh Leibish Halberstam of Bobov

Grand Rabbi Mordechai David Unger of Bobov (כ"ק אדמו"ר מבאבוב, שליט"א) was born in 1954 to Grand Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchok Unger, the previous Dombrover Rebbe of Borough Park. He is a son-in-law of the late Grand Rabbi Naftali Zvi Halberstam of Bobov.

Following the passing of his father-in-law, Grand Rabbi Naftali Zvi Halberstam; the followers of Bobov disagreed as to who should succeed as Bobover Rebbe. Many Bobover Hasidim accepted as the successors his two sons-in-law: Rabbi Mordechai David Unger as their Rebbe (אדמו"ר) and Rabbi Yehoshua Rubin as their Ruv (אבד"ק); while many others have become followers of the late Grand Rabbi's brother, Rabbi Ben Zion Aryeh Leibish Halberstam.

In the house of Grand Rabbi Naftali Zvi Halberstam, before his funeral took place; his sons-in-law Rabbi Mordechai David Unger and Rabbi Yehoshua Rubin were both announced as his successors. This was announced in the presence of the lay president of Bobov Rabbi Moshe Meir Einhorn. Decisions on how the leadership was to be divided was to be decided among themselves. On the next day the coronation of Rabbi Mordechai David Unger as Rebbe and Rabbi Yehoshua Rubin as Ruv took place in the Bais Yaakov building on 45th Street in Borough Park. Their current Beth Midrash is also located in this building and is referred to as "Bobov 45".
