Moran - O Móráin.

The Irish form of this name, means,'descendent of Mórán', translated,'The Great One'. This is the name of a respected branch of the Uí Fiachrach in the present counties of Mayo and Sligo.

The majority bearers of this surname in County Mayo are descended from the O' Morain clan whose ancient kingdom was in north Mayo surrounding the modern Town of Ballina. Following the Norman invasion their territory was usurped by the Barretts and Burkes and the sept lost its central organisation .

The modern distribution of the surname within Mayo suggests that the Morans spread southwards and today are chiefly found in the central area of the county, particularly in the barony of Carra.

Moran is also first name (in Hebrew), family name (in other languages, such as Gaelic), a place name, and the name of things. For its etymology, pronunciation, and meaning, see Wiktionary.
