[edit] History

The school was founded in 1936 by Karolos Berzan, a mathematician, under the name Standard Lykeion of Athens ( Greek: Πρότυπον Λύκειον Αθηνών, Protipon Likeion Athínon). It moved to its current location in 1952, when ownership was transferred to Antonis Moraitis – whose name the school has had since 1976. After Antonis Moraitis' death in 1981, the administration of the school was transferred to his daughters, Chrysanthi Moraiti-Kartali (middle and high school) and Katerina Moraiti (primary school, until her death in 1996). The school was founded upon certain traditional values – known amongst students and staff as the "12 principles" ( Greek: Δωδεκάλογος, Dodékalogos) which continue to guide students and educators today.

[edit] Today

Today, the Moraitis school is one of the most famous private schools in Greece. Courses are taught in Greek, in accordance to the Greek educational system, paving the way towards admission to a Greek university. In the late 1980s the school was the first to offer an alternative 2 year English-speaking syllabus through the International Baccalaureate programme for the 16-18 year old students of the school wishing to apply to universities outside of Greece (typically in Europe or the United States). Every year, students graduate from the school and are admitted in a number of universities in Greece, the UK, the US and elsewhere.

It is one of the largest educational institutions in the country, with more than 2,000 students and 240 teachers, amongst its primary school, middle school and high school.

The Moraitis School is also famous for a hosting an annual school fair ("Panigiri") [1]. Organised by its students every year, the School fair hosts a variety of activities and events. The fair is always very profitable, with all the revenue going to charity organisations. Traditionally, the Moraitis school fair is typically held on the weekend before the Easter break. The fair of the neighbouring private school, Athens College is held a week earlier to avoid a clash. The Moraitis School and Athens College share a friendly rivalry, which is seen in various sporting events.
