[edit] University of Chicago Laboratory Schools
Founded by John Dewey in 1896 in Chicago, Illinois. A progressive nursery through 12th grade institution founded on the principles of hands-on learning and exploration. Affiliated with the University of Chicago, it is now considered one of the top private school in the Midwest, known for its rigorous curriculum.
Today the school is divided into Lower, Middle (completed in 1993), and High Schools (completed in 1967). The competition for children to be accepted to the school is fierce, with countless qualified students turned away each year. Many children either begin, and continue through, the school in nursery, or in ninth grade; 75% of applications are for those two grades.
Although known more for its academics than athletics, the high school competes in the Independent School League (ISL).
