Talk:Monkeypox
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sarah Lane from The ScreenSavers started a war on the Monkeypox page resulting in it being reverted and protected. Robert Claypool

Who unprotected this page, and why? -- Zoe
- Not me, but it was unprotected after I listed it on the village pump (so were the other two...). -- Notheruser 04:02 13 Jun 2003 (UTC)
I did. The worst seems to be over, and protecting pages is generally a bad idea, especially when people are coming here to experiment. Let them play around a bit -- they can't break anything. Repeat vandals should be banned, the rest should be dealt with in the traditional manner. --Eloquence 04:09 13 Jun 2003 (UTC)
And as soon as you did, some driveby vandal blanked it. -- Zoe
Sure, and there'll be a couple more. Don't panic. --Eloquence 04:13 13 Jun 2003 (UTC)
Possibly everytime this episode of The Screensavers re-airs, that page will be vandalized. Robert Claypool

http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/answerstips/story/0,24330,3445952,00.html In this blog entry, Sarah Lane confesses to having added a comment on Wikipedia. I remember, when I saw the "Sarah Lane is totally cool! But she doesn't have monkeypox." comment and was about to edit it (until I was beaten to it by someone else), I had no clue that I almost participated in a page war that started on national television. This is truly a major Wikipedia event. Of course, this also means that Wikipedia will probably be defaced a lot more than normal in the next few weeks due to a whole bunch of irresponsible teenagers seeing Wikipedia and thinking it's "cool" to deface pages. Personally, I think Sarah Lane might have been trying to make a point, but I don't know. I wasn't watching the show at the time. - an anonymous user who was very amused by reading the "page history"
- Landmark event if her readers are more interested in contributing than defacing, otherwise just a hiccough. Time will tell<G>. I love that her original "test" lasted about 8 seconds. -- Someone else 06:04 13 Jun 2003 (UTC)
As for Sarah Lane making a point, I've already emailed her expressing my displeasure, and she emailed me back almost immediately, apologising for causing us trouble. In case anyone else feels the same way, her email address is mailto:sarah@techtv.com -- Tim Starling 06:14 13 Jun 2003 (UTC)
- I don't. I think people are making a mountain out of a molehill. There's a big difference between serious vandalism and genuine newbie experimentation. Sure, that's what the sandbox is for, but let's face it -- showing the sandbox on TV would be kind of lame. Of course, it would have been best if she had added factual information, but that would have ignored the obvious question, "can't anybody add junk?"
- Technically, it should not be possible to cause us trouble by giving us publicity. If it is possible, there is something wrong with Wikipedia. I do not think that is the case. There is a lot of unintended irony in Sarah's words. She asks: "Although this excites me in its ease and simplicity, it's a little frightening. I mean, what if I had instead written "My boss is a big fat **** and his phone number is ****"? Oh my, how scary! Anyone can write anything and people have to clean it up manually! Wait a second, what's this, below the article? "Talkback section"? "Post a comment here"? Hey, I could write that Sarah Lane sucks and there would probably no moderator to correct it. Obviously, if I wrote the same in a Wikipedia article, it would be removed immediately, a previous revision conveniently restored or a newly created junk article deleted. Wikipedia is much, much safer against things like libel and slander than an open discussion forum.
- But this is getting terribly off-topic. Let me therefore close by remarking that I am fairly certain that Sarah Lane does not have monkeypox, but if there's any evidence to the contrary, I'd like to hear about it. --Eloquence 06:24 13 Jun 2003 (UTC)
I have unprotected this page again. -- The Anome 13:25 13 Jun 2003 (UTC)
- ...and it's become protected again. -- goatasaur

- Many people wrong feel that monkeypox is contracted from monkeys. What can we do to change this misconception as a community? -- 68.60.159.110
[edit] Monkeypox is a band
There is a band called Monkeypox from Miami Beach, Florida. Check it out at www.dippyrecords.com. I think this is notable to mention here. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 216.189.191.234 (talk • contribs).
