Montreal bus rapid transit

Montreal, Quebec, Canada has a single bus rapid transit line currently in operation (2005).

The STM R-BUS 505 running along Boulevard Pie-IX (Pope Pius the ninth boulevard) is the rush-hour equivalent of the BUS route 139 Pie-IX. It currently offers curbside service just like the 139. The stops along the route are the same as the 139's with regular bus shelter every couple of stops. A few years ago this route was totally different, it used to run against traffic on the part-time dedicated bus lanes on the wrong side of the traffic median. It featured dedicated enclosed BRT stations at regular intervals and priority traffic lights. The BRT service of the 505 was indefinitely stopped because of a death of a passenger who was hit by a 505 bus, the passenger was unaware of the against-traffic service. But this wasn't the only death, there were many other deaths over the years.^{[citation needed]} There are plans to restart the service again with more safety cones and fences along Pie-IX Boulevard.^{[citation needed]}

The line now runs from the intersection of Boulevard Henri-Bourassa and Boulevard Albert-Hudon [1] & [2] by way of Boulevard Albert-Hudon to Boulevard Léger to Boulevard Lacordaire to Boulevard Henri-Bourassa to Boulevard Pie-IX and on to Pie-IX Metro station. The system runs in one direction in the morning and the other in the afternoon/evening. There are ideas to replace the BRT with a true LRT tramline on the street using shared-right-of-way. Pie-IX was once projected to have a Montreal Metro line, which never came to fruition.
