Montalbán de Córdoba is a town in the province of Córdoba in Andalusia, southern Spain. The town have 4500 inhabitants and is to a distance of 42 km from Córdoba, the capital of the province.

Prehistory- Of this epoch is had pottery’s ruins opposing in a hill at a distance of 4 km in the south. At present it is in the archaeological museum of Cordoba. Third Century B.C.- Near of Montalban had an old Roman city known as Segovia. 210 B.C.- Romans and Carthaginians fought in a battle. 45 B.C.- Cesar and Pompeyo’s sons fought in a battle. Suddenly there isn’t news of Segovia. Fourth Century- Fifth Century- A ruins and a catacomb are found in Tentecarreta at a distance of 2 km of the town. Thirtieth Century- The Fernandez of Cordoba established to Montalban in 1530. In 1668, Montalban had 1040 inhabitant. 1808- 1812- During the French invasion, French burned the municipal file and the history’s facts of this town disappear. 1880- Montalban had 3000 inhabitant. 1910- Montalban had 3300 inhabitant. 1960- This town had 4700 inhabitant, but descended to 3800 for the emigration. 1990- 2003- Inhabitant’s number is between 4400 and 4500.

[edit] El Calvario

"El Calvario" is in the south of Montalbán, inside the town. Thought in the beginning was outside the town, because this was smaller than now. The first Calvario hermitage was a small church in the outside of Montalbán, with old castle ruins. The hermitage was built on 1590 approximately. The current church, was built on 1690 and it have several reform. The current look is 18th century, and the dome is 1850. Her style is neoclassic, with dome and belfry. The Calvario hermitage is white. The floor is Greek cross, with altarpiece, where is Nuestro Padre Jesús del Calvario, the sevillian style. The roof of dome have a cylindrical torch.

[edit] Madre de Dios Hermitage

The hermitage is situated in Madre de Dios street, corner with Ancha street. This church was called Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, is of the 16th century, toward 1850. On 1954 was made repairs. The madre de Dios hermitage, have three small naves separated for pointed. This hermitage have repairs on 17th century, how her altarpiece, with eight oils paint. Point her altar of San Antonio de Padua, with an image of great merit, near to the altarpiece, of the 17th century. This image is considered the better of Montalban and is a replica of the Pedro de Mena. The Madre de Dios hermitage, was repairs on 1993. At present the church is closed and often don't celebrated worships.

[edit] Santa María de Gracia Church

This church is a parish church situated in the Andalusia's square, in front of the town hall. The church is oval, and it is made of brick. The church have a little altar dedicated to the Inmaculada, pieces of baroque altarpiece and ruins of the old church. The Cristo de la Veracruz, from the Veracruz's hermitage and San Francisco de Asís is the patron saint of the Montalban. The Santa Maria de Gracia church have pieces of goldsmithery from the old church, as the parish cross, silver's monstrance and the shrine's door. The old church was demolished on 1964. Peoples thought this church is of 14th century, of decadent ogival style. It had 25 mettres of long, 17m of broad and 10m of height. This church was built with poverty. Her inner was of three naves, the sides were vaulted and the central nave was coffered. The church had a lot of altars and more of a dozen. The main altar were made by Gaspar Lorenzo de los Cobos on 1724. The church had two entry door, a front door and other in the right back, both with ogival arch. A beltry with four bells and a rich patrimony of goldsmithery.

This building was built in the La Paz street on 1984, when the democratic town hall arrived. This building have two floors, with an area of 250m2. For a time was a town hall while the new town hall was built. The culture's house have library, adults education, lecture and social gathering, publics and officials ceremonies, general presentation and cultural activities. At present the second floor is a municipal library. In the first floor is the adults education and the main hall.

The library was inaugurated on 1986. Until 1990 the library was situated in the second floor of the old medical center, at present "Oficina de Informacion Juvenil". Then the library had 1300 volumes. On 1990, the library was moved to the second floor of the culture's house. The library have sections of children's and teenager, adults, newspaper library... In this time this library had too many of 700 members with card, too many of 4000 titles, too many of 5000 volumes. At the moment the library have too many of 7000 volumes.

[edit] Tentecarreta Catacombs

Tentecarreta is a place at a distance of 2km. In Tentecarreta was found ruins of subterranean gallery. This galleries served of necropolis on 4th and 5th centuries. These galleries are a catacomb. The catacombs was rare in the Roman empire, and the catacomb of Montalban are only in Spain. The Tentecarreta have two cross galleries oriented according to the cardinal points. The galleries are narrows and tortuous. The galleries state is very eroded due to humidity, collapses and avalanches of mud. The south gallery to give shelter a collective burial, this is very important. In the east gallery exist a niche where lie in foetal position. In this gallery appeared pitcher, plates, necklaces, copper money. The majority of Honorio, a Roman emperor.

[edit] El Mesto

The Mesto is an old tree, hybrid between evergreen oak and cork oak, situated at a distance of 7 kilomettres of Montalban approximately. During 8th century gave shade, shelter and rest to the peasant and travellers. The old tree measured 15 mettres and was necessaried four person for they cover his trunk. In his trunk was made a big hollow, where the people made fire. The tree was debilitated by the fire. On 1980 was built an association for his defence. The Mesto served of inspiration to writers and artist and the tree waked a special sensibility. The Mesto don't resist his foliage and fell demolished on summer of 1995. The Mesto stay how a symbol, a feeling, in memory of something lost.

[edit] August Fair

The fair is celebrated during the days 6, 7, 8 of August, in honour of Nuestro Padre Jesús del Calvario. In this time, was finished the principal agricultural works. In the fair is produced great crowd of people, how the brother of others town, the ones come to the Calvario hermitage and the emigrant of earlier decades, which helpful their holidays for come their origin town. The fair is celebrated in the enclosure fair, the Calvario's flat, and the basement's esplanade.

The pilgrimage is celebrated on May 15th in San Isidro's Labrador honour. Almost the whole people moves up to the Huerta Dios, to only one kilomettres. About half a morning there is formed a procession headed by the coach of followed San Isidro by other coaches, hersemen, typical suits... Lately the custom of the coaches is getting lost and almost none is done. Once in Huerta Dios is proceeded to the benediction of the fields and every group of friend happens the day in the sed that has prepared before up to the fall of the evening I which San Isidro returns to Montalban. Before here it was finishing the pilgrimage, but nowadays it is lengthened and many people continue the whole night, since a verbena, a contest is done of Sevillian, delivery of prizes ... and each one since one takes it or until it lasts.
