Monster Max is an arcade adventure game for the Game Boy handheld game console. It was released in 1994 by Rare and Titus. It was written by Jon Ritman and Bernie Drummond.

It is very similar in both graphics and gameplay to Ritman and Drummond's 1987 title Head over Heels.

[edit] Overview

The overall objective is to defeat the evil villain who threatens to ban all music from the world. Monster Max himself plays the electric guitar and if the player does not take action for around two minutes he starts playing his guitar.

The object of the game is to complete levels by collecting or destroying the objects at the end. There are three levels to each floor except the last floor where there is only one. Each level has a briefing and the player is awarded credits depending on how many lives they finish the level with and if they collected any bonus items on the way. To advance to the next floor the player must acquire a certain amount of credits.

[edit] Gameplay

Monster Max is part puzzle game and part platformer. The game is made up of isometric rooms, with the player proceeding to the next room by going through doors and such. Everything resets in the room if exited it and then returned to so if the player messes a puzzle up it is easy to retry.

[edit] Saving

There is no saving in Monster Max. Instead there are passwords which the player can use to restart the game at the point it was left. Legend of Zelda on the Game Boy had saving, as did others, but the price of battery saves meant that Monster Max used passwords instead.
