[edit] Monster Blood (Goosebumps #3)

While his parents have to go house-shopping in Atlanta, Evan Ross is sent to stay with his weird great-aunt Kathryn. He buys a dusty can of "monster blood" from an old toy store, and meets Andrea, aka Andy. The two discover that Monster Blood is a green slimy liquid, which grows rapidly upon exposure to air. It stretches, bounces and glows in the dark, but also absorbs anything it can. Those who eat the Monster Blood will also grow - namely, Evan's dog Trigger. Until the final confrontation, Evan believes that his great-aunt is a witch.

The real villain is Kathryn's cat Sarabeth, a mean cat with sharp claws who turns out to be a witch disguised as a cat. In the final confrontation, Sarabeth attempts to use the Monster Blood against them, but can't control it and is absorbed into it. The Blood then shrinks into nothing, releasing all those trapped within it... except Sarabeth herself. Trigger also returns to his normal size.

Now living in Atlanta, Evan loathes his weird science teacher Mr. Murphy and the evil hamster Cuddles. When Andy shows up to live with her aunt for a year, she brings the old can of Monster Blood with her, and Evan decides to use it to get revenge... by feeding some to Cuddles, who promptly begins to grow into a giant. However, when Cuddles gets too large and goes out of control, Evan eats some of the Blood himself and does battle with the hamster, holding him off just long enough. When the expiration date passes, the magic wears off, returning both Evan and Cuddles to their normal sizes. However, the final chapter reveals that Andy's parents found another can of Monster Blood while in Europe and sent it to her.

Cuddles was such a gross character that he became one of the Goosebumps spokespeople, along with Prince Khor-Ru the growling mummy and Curly the skeleton.

Evan's little cousin Kermit is getting on his nerves, always conducting strange experiments that usually get Evan in trouble. Evan decides to strike back, sticking a bit of Monster Blood in one of Kermit's mixtures. But the experiment grows huge and explodes. Evan accidentally swallows a bit and starts to grow again. Fortunately, Kermit invented something else to make him shrink. Evan reverts to normal, but the book ends on a cliffhanger, in which Evan has shrunk too far, down to minuscule proportions.

[edit] Monster Blood IV (Goosebumps #62)

This book introduces "blue" slimy creatures from the Monster Blood, which is similar in name only. These Monster Blood creatures are semi-sentient organisms that multiply themselves by drinking water, becoming increasingly aggressive each time. The middle of this book reveals that these creatures are failed military experiments. Evan Ross, Andy and Kermit Ross are able to stop the blue creatures in a final showdown.

Evan Ross can't forget about Monster Blood - the evil green slime that never stops growing. It can turn ordinary pets into ferocious animals and twelve-year-old kids into freakish giants. But now there's new kind of Monster Blood in town. It comes in a can just like the others. Only difference is this slime is blue instead of green. And instead of just growing, it's multiplying - into terrifying blue creatures with razor-sharp teeth...

(Monster Blood IV was the last of the series, and the last Goosebumps book).

[edit] TV Episode

Monster Blood was adapted as an episode of the TV series, in which Sarabeth created the Blood and was accidentally stuck in cat form due to a botched spell in trying to control the Monster Blood. Kathryn then took the Blood and stored it in a jar, kept in a spare room until Evan and Andy discovered it. Then, an original reprint, "More Monster Blood", featured the return of the Blood on an airplane as Evan and Andy were traveling, along with Evan's annoying cousin Kermit. They found that it hated airline food, and by forcing a great deal of food into its body, they were able to defeat the Blood.
