[edit] Player

During his active career, Mons Ivar played two season in FK Austria Wien, two and a half seasons in Lillestrøm SK and a total of 7 seasons in SK Brann. At the end of his career, Mjelde were loaned out to Sogndal IL in 2001. Mjelde got 72 goals on 160 matches for SK Brann, earning himself and the team silvermedals in 1997 and 2000, bronzemedals and cupsilver in 1999 and an advancement to the quarter final in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1997, only to be eliminated by Liverpool FC. After returning to Brann from Austria in 1996, Mjelde scored 19 goals in 15 league appearances, earning him the Kniksen award as "striker of the year". Mons Ivar got 3 national caps and 2 goals for Norway.

[edit] Coach

Retiring as a player after the 2001 season, Mjelde became the new coach for Brann's reserve team in Norway's 3rd highest division. The year after, Brann's main coach, Teitur Þórðarson was fired after delivering a catastrophic season. In January 2003, after only one year's experience as a coach, Mons Ivar Mjelde was appointed head coach in SK Brann. The following season, Mjelde led Brann to a number 6 posision in the premiership. The year after he led the club to a bronze medal in the premiership and cup victory, Brann's first trophy in 22 years. The 2005 season, however, was a big disappointment. The objective was premiership gold and a new cup final, but Brann only managed a number 6 position in the Tippeligaen and was eliminated in the cup quarter final. Even if the 2006 season looks to be a glory one, Mjelde is still much criticized in the press and among the fans for his lack of tactical skills. Spending a lot and never giving up his "happy-go-lucky" attitude surly makes him a controversial coach.
